Trying to find a replacement laptop charger for your Dell laptop can be tricky. When you purchased your Dell laptop it came with a special Dell laptop charger. Unfortunately, it is treated as a spare part as far as Dell are concerned, so you cant just go out and buy a new one. The alternative is to purchase a replacement Dell laptop charger or universal laptop charger. There can be problems with buying an OEM or universal laptop charger so consider the following if you're in the market for a good replacement to your Dell laptop charger.

Universal laptop chargers can charge most laptops. They are able to do this by supplying the user with many different ISO standard laptop charging heads or tips, and having the ability to switch their output to match the input required by your charger. Universal laptop chargers have two ways of switching their outputs: the manual switching way and the auto switching way. These two formats are explained here.

Manual switchers:

As the name suggests, these chargers require you to know what input your laptop needs and select the correct voltage from a pre set range that the charger can output. These manually operated chargers are typically the cheaper of the two formats, but there are problems attached. The trouble with these chargers is that if you select the wrong voltage, or accidentally change the selection switch, then you risk causing harm to your laptop and almost certainly damaging the charger. They are generally cheap alternatives, and as such their build quality is sometimes poor and they can be heavy.

Auto switchers:

These new smart chargers are the more expensive of the two formats. They automatically switch voltages and amperage to meet your laptop's needs, and protect it from surges and current overrun. They need very little attention and in the long run are the better deal!
